Panasonic have released its second-generation, full-frame mirrorless camera: the Lumix S5 II and Lumix S5 IIX. Both cameras feature a new 24.2MP sensor, dual native ISO, and 5-axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization. However, the S5 IIX comes with additional video recording options, making it an attractive choice for video enthusiasts.
The S5 IIX boasts RAW video output, All-Intra and internal ProRes recording to an external SSD via USB. It has a sleek, monochromatic design, with a red recording button being the only exception. The autofocus system, based on 779 point detection, is a significant upgrade from the 225-point contrast autofocus system in the first-generation S5, providing better performance in low-light conditions and when handling multiple subjects.
Both S5 II and S5 IIX cameras can record 4K 30 fps and 6K 30 fps in full frame, and offer 3.3K anamorphic mode and 120 fps at 1080p. A built-in heat dispersion fan allows unlimited recording in 4K, but limits anything above 4K to thirty minutes. Internal audio can be recorded at 48kHz/24bit using the built-in microphone, with two 3.5mm jacks for headphones and an external mic. Additional features include live cropping, adjustable waveforms, and vectorscopes.
The S5 IIX stands out with its ability to capture 5.8K ProRes to an SSD with All-Intra compression and ProRes RAW to an Atomos recorder. The S5 II can also capture ProRes, but only after a $200 firmware update. Since the S5 IIX is only $200 more expensive than the S5 II, it may be worth considering for those who prioritize video capabilities.
In summary, while both the S5 II and S5 IIX deliver excellent photo performance, the S5 IIX offers a range of extra video features that make it a great choice for video enthusiasts.
