The best smart display out there
Pros | Cons |
Truly unique Blends into homes Tons of fun and useful integrations | Lack of custom integrations Occasional connection issues Some features outright broken |
If you have ever seen Divoom products in the past you will already be fairly familiar with the format, a very low resolution display (normally 16 x 16 pixels) allowing you to display animated gifs or animations to really make your space feel personalised thanks to its slim profile and thriving pixel art community. Well as you can imagine having just 256 pixels is rather limited in what you can display and though I would still recommend the original Pixoo to anyone wanting a fun and unique way to enhance your space, the new Pixoo 64 takes everything I love about the original, times the pixel count by 4 (hence the name 64) and giving a ton of new, unique and fun animations and integrations making this more than just a simple animated photoframe.
Whats in the box?
The panel itself comes in a very nice matte black box which also includes USB type C cable to power it. unlike all the other Pixoo products this one has no internal battery so will need to be powered at all times indicating to me this is the sort of product you would mount and cable manage into your space rather than something more portable, sadly you will need a 2 AMP USB power brick as well as is the trend in tech right now this doesn’t actually come with one. Its worth noting too to make sure you use the right power supply, it will keep power cycling with anything less than 2 AMP, in theory if its close to a PC on a desk you could use on of its USB ports but its worth remembering many of the USB ports will kill power when the PC is off.
Design and mounting
In terms of design this new larger panel does nothing to really revolutionize Divooms product design but thats a good thing in my book as honestly I think these products look great, they are very simple in design almost looking like a photo frame with thin black bezels, perhaps a small critique here is I would like to see a white variant to allow it to blend into more home decors better but that truly is being very nit-picky.
The device is 760g in weight, so a smidge heavier than other offerings due to its size of 63cm x 63cm so finding a good place to mount this device is critical, thankfully Divoom have you covered here too in terms of mounting, it has a built-in kickstand that can be stored at the back for when you are placing it on a desk or flat surface. It also features a few wall mount holes which I personally would prefer as it keeps desk clutter to a minimum and divoom clearly designed the device to mount alongside your existing photo frames. There are also three tripod mounts (one at the top and two at the bottom) I personally fail to see a use for these but they could be a useful mounting option for you if required.
Perhaps more strangely though is the inclusion of an exposed micro SD card on the back of the device, at first I thought this may have simply been a way to load custom GIFs and animations onto the device, however, it turns out this is actually the firmware for the device! so make sure your not tampering with this too much however it does mean at at least you can quite easily reflash the device if anything were to go wrong with the device in the future.
Overall I love how this device looks simply because it’s so simple yet so well-designed, the display is, unfortunately, a gloss finish so mounting this in direct sunlight will lead to a hard-to-read display but this is true for most displays of this calibre, each of the 4,096 pixels is individually RGB addressable and is quite the sight to behold, its bright and easy to read from almost any angle, and if you plugged into a more powerful power adaptor you can opt for a brighter display too which is a nice touch if you’re not so worried about power saving. around the device you have a few microphones for some of the visualizer effects, some speakers for smart functionality and a volume-style button for turning on and off the display and switching between modes such as ‘Hot’ and your pre-defined faces.
High Tech – Low Tech
For a display all about low poly pixel art this device isn’t half full of juicy tech! its the first device in the Divoom line up with direct Wifi support meaning it opens up the device to a plethora of really cool integrations and faces that were simply not possible on other devices divoom designed, below are a few of my favorite connected faces that I actually use on a daily basis:
Financial trackers, whether it is stocks, crypto currencies or exchange rates, These are super fun and actually very useful too! choosing a few of your favorite stocks or currencies from your digital or real portfolios this can be a great way of keeping track of your investments at a glance and allowed me to watch the crash of my crypto investments in real time!
Gamer stats are definitely a little more gimmicky but just as fun, right now it has support for LoL (League Of Legends), Overwatch 2 and Fortnite sowing you your level and other stats such as wins, unfortunately, the Apex Legends face as of the time of writing is broken and has apparently been this way for a long time, I’m unsure if this is a Divoom or Respawn issue but I would love to either see this face resolved or removed in the future as having broken integrations like this is definitely not a good look!
My favourite one is the social media tracker, this includes a YouTube subscriber counter or view counter for a specific video – but there are options to also view your stats on Twitter, Twitch, Billi Billi and more. its definitely a fun way to show off to friends and family your internet clout or have it as a background to youtube or Twitch streams make them certainly feel more interactive.
Right now you are at the mercy of Divoom and what they support but they have mentioned possibly expanding this project to become more open source which would help speed up support for all kinds of platforms, It is definitely a shame this is not already a thing as I would love a way to integrate my own API’s for smart home products and such so I can truly personalise this incredibly unique display to my liking.
Displaying the world
Of course, being a display – you can use it as a showpiece in your home to display 8-16-32 and 64-bit pixel art, If you are not very artistic like me you can rely on the Divboom community and its amazing designers to choose your favourites to download to the device or let them choose some of their favourites from the ‘Hot’ Section for it to cycle through, many of the animations are nothing short of amazing, they look incredibly cool and animations flow so smoothly on the display you almost forget it’s such a low-resolution display at all if however your feeling more adventurous you can also design your own animations using either their app or your favourite animation software as long as it’s exported in the correct format.
You can also choose from a few other fun integrations you are probably familiar with if you have used a Divboom product before such as world clock, calendar or even weather forecast – the options are basically limitless and only getting better with time, the little speaker on board will allow you to set a timer to ping when complete and this is certainly very gimmicky with its ticking bomb animation i can see why it might be useful to some people.
Almost Perfect
Overall then is this device without flaw? absolutely not, no device is but that shouldn’t put you off buying a Pixoo 64, I would occasionally get connection issues between the third party integrations and the divboom after a device restart so its definitely more suited to being a always on display but these issues were quickly resolved by connecting to the device directly via Bluetooth and the app, this connection appeared to give it the kick it needed to become fully functional again.
This is definitely one of the most fun and unique smart displays on the market right now and I can see at least 1 of its many integrations being interesting to someone, or even if you just want a unique photoframe to show off some of your favourite gif animations or your own creations there really is nothing like this on the market and at under £120 I would recommend this product to everyone in some capacity.
