Secretlab Titan Evo Review (2022 Edition)

The Ultimate Gaming Chair?

Secretlab are considered one of the most comfortable and luxury office chairs on the market, so when I was given the opportunity to try the Titan Evo, I was intrigued to see what the hype is all about. They’re not just considered the luxury chair for gamers: all my development colleagues were raving about them. I very nearly gave in a few years ago, until the chair decision was made by my boys, who bought me another brand for Christmas!

This would seem to be a good thing, as these chairs have come a long way since then, making some revolutionary changes to bring you the up to date chair that I’ll be reviewing.

Packaging

The chair came incredibly well packaged. Everything was individually wrapped and padded. It was all well labelled and there was no scrabbling around looking for the instructions, because they were the size of the box!

It has to be seen to be believed. This could be considered slightly OTT, but really helped me focus on the build, rather than walking away to check instructions every two seconds.

Alongside all of the pieces, Secretlab have included their own toolkit, meaning the chair can be built straight out of the box with no issues. The tools are quality, not flimsy, throw away tools. It adds a touch of class.

Assembly

Having built a similar office chair previously, I fully expected the build to be complex and cumbersome. As a small 5’3” female who hasn’t been to the gym in two years, I did worry I’d need help to assemble the chair.

But, as I mentioned before, everything was very well labelled and the instructions were very clear. This made the build incredibly easy and from unpacking to a fully built chair it took just half an hour, considerably less than the previous chair I owned.

The Titan Evo is a very sophisticated looking chair in their range. Retailing from ÂŁ469 at direct pricing, the chair comes in three sizes, small (Height <169cm Weight <90kg), regular (Height 170-189cm Weight <100kg) and XL (Height 181-205cm Weight 80-180kg). The chair is made from patent pending cold-cure foam which is formulated to be medium firm.

According to Secretlab, this is the “optimal balance for that gentle, cradling feel”. The chair is designed to support long sessions in the chair, whether that be for gaming or working in complete comfort.

The seat base has sloping side wings to help centre you in the chair. The Titan feels very roomy, giving you freedom of movement while using it. Not only do I work from home, I game in the evening, so having freedom of movement and the ability to adjust the chair is very important to me. I found the adjustments really flexible and easy to use, and the chair is extremely comfortable for the duration I’m using it, which is frequently in excess of eight hours a day.

The Titan Evo boasts a NeoTM hybrid leatherette that Secretlab describes as being 12 times more durable than regular PU leather. It’s also the same as genuine NAPA leather from sports cars, giving it that extra luxury look and feel. It definitely oozes quality and luxury to look at and touch.

Lumbar Support

As someone who has struggled with lower back pain for the past 10 or so years, lumbar support is very important to me. Even if you don’t suffer from back pain, spending long periods of time in a chair can cause discomfort, if not properly supported. Secretlabs have developed a dynamic lumbar support that adapts to you, another patent pending feature. The chair back “comprises a proprietary lattice of living hinges that flex to your spine”. These allow the chair to to closely support your lower back, enabling you to meet the natural 20 to 45° curvature of your lower spine.

This was the feature that fascinated me the most. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure how effective this would be having always had a lumbar support cushion in the past that was very effective. By twisting the two knobs on either side of the chair, I was able to adjust the height of the lumbar support and the depth of the lumbar support. This really enabled me to fine- tune the chair to support my back. I was surprised at the level of support I was able to get and the lack of cushion didn’t bother me.

Ergonomics and Adjustments

The chair offers multiple adjustments for comfort. The multitool mechanism allows you to adjust your chair to your optimal position for working or gaming. Should you want to go into a more relaxed position, the chair reclines to an impressive 165°. The hydraulic height adjustment is super responsive and an improvement on previous models.

The Titan Evo has fancy magnetic armrests which can be replaced or upgraded, allowing you to swap them for Secretlab TechnoGel tops or another standard arm rest if they’re damaged. In theory, this is a great feature but when pulling my chair to the desk, the armrest detached unexpectedly, breaking a nail which is less than ideal, and possibly dangerous.

The armrests can also be adjusted by height and elbow tilt, allowing you to maximise your comfort.

Secret lab have even updated the pillow on this chair. Previous versions had an elasticated memory phone head pillow, however, this version boasts a magnetic memory foam head pillow that snaps into place for a more accurate head support. The pillow itself has also been reshaped for better support and infused with a cooling gel.

Overall

I really love the look and feel of this chair. This chair is definitely ‘cool kid’ energy. Not only do I work 9-5 in day time, I also stream for 2-3 hours some evenings, so the fact that this chair is comfortable, supportive and looks the part, ticks all the boxes for me. The biggest gripe, in my experience, was the magnetic armrest detaching when pulling the chair in, as it did cause me injury, but I think this is something that I need to get used to as opposed to a serious fault. A good chair that’s going to pass the test of time and support is an investment. For what you get with the Secretlab Titan Evo, I feel like the price is fair given similar chairs on the market. Secretlab regularly has great sales, and as with most online stores these days you can pay in instalments.
